Quick answer

Use poster paper for short-term indoor displays where the print remains dry and protected. Use synthetic material, vinyl or a suitable rigid board when the display may face humidity, cleaning, handling or sheltered outdoor conditions. For exposed outdoor use, select weather-resistant printing and mounting, and avoid ordinary foam board or paper unless the display is temporary and fully protected.

Key points

  • Ordinary poster paper is mainly suitable for indoor display.
  • Synthetic paper provides better moisture resistance.
  • Foam board is lightweight but not ideal for exposed outdoor use.
  • PP hollow board is economical and more suitable for temporary outdoor signs.
  • Solid PP board provides better moisture resistance and rigidity.
  • Lamination protects the printed surface but not every board edge.
  • Sunlight, rain, heat and wind must all be considered.

Why the display location matters

The material should be chosen according to the environment, not only according to print quality or price. A poster that performs well inside an air-conditioned shop may curl, soften, fade or detach when used near an entrance or outdoors.

Before ordering, identify whether the display will be fully indoors, near a window, in a sheltered outdoor area or directly exposed to rain and sunlight.

Indoor and outdoor poster requirements

Protected environment

Indoor Display

Indoor posters are normally protected from rain, wind and severe temperature changes. The main concerns are appearance, glare, mounting, handling and display time.

  • No direct rain exposure
  • Lower wind pressure
  • More stable temperature
  • Paper materials are usually acceptable
  • Framing and mounting are easier
Typical locations: Retail shops, offices, exhibitions, shopping centres, restaurants and indoor notice boards.
Weather exposure

Outdoor Display

Outdoor materials may face rain, humidity, sunlight, heat, dust and wind. The board, ink, adhesive, mounting and installation must all be suitable.

  • Possible rain and moisture
  • Strong sunlight and heat
  • Wind load and movement
  • Material expansion or bending
  • More demanding installation
Typical locations: Building entrances, roadside displays, outdoor events, construction areas and temporary directional signs.

Common poster and display materials

01

Poster Paper

Coated paper provides sharp images and strong colour for indoor promotional posters. It is economical but vulnerable to moisture, tearing and curling.

Best for: Indoor frames, wall posters, retail promotions and short-term campaigns.
02

Synthetic Paper

Synthetic media is more resistant to moisture and tearing than ordinary paper. It is useful where the poster may be handled or exposed to humidity.

Best for: Menus, notices, temporary sheltered displays and frequently handled information.
03

Foam Board

Foam board is lightweight, smooth and easy to display. It gives posters a rigid presentation but can bend, dent or absorb moisture in unsuitable conditions.

Best for: Indoor exhibitions, presentations, product displays and shop signage.
04

PP Hollow Board

PP hollow board is lightweight, economical and more moisture-resistant than paper-based board. Its fluted structure may be visible from the edges.

Best for: Temporary outdoor signs, event directions, property notices and economical campaign boards.
05

Solid PP Board

Solid polypropylene board has a smoother and more uniform structure than hollow board. It resists moisture and is suitable for many semi-permanent uses.

Best for: Menu boards, information panels, sheltered signage and washable displays.
06

Vinyl Sticker on Board

Printed vinyl can be mounted onto PP board, acrylic, aluminium composite panel or another suitable rigid substrate.

Best for: Outdoor signs, shop panels, directional displays and longer-term rigid graphics.

Which material suits different locations?

01

Inside a Shop

Poster paper, synthetic paper or foam board is normally suitable depending on mounting and display duration.

02

Shopping Mall

Paper posters, foam board and mounted synthetic prints work well in protected indoor areas.

03

Near a Window

Consider sunlight, heat and condensation. Synthetic material or laminated vinyl may perform better.

04

Sheltered Entrance

Solid PP board, synthetic media or vinyl mounted on a suitable rigid board is usually safer than paper.

05

Outdoor Event

PP hollow board is practical for short-term directions, schedules and sponsor signs when securely installed.

06

Long-Term Outdoor Sign

Use outdoor vinyl on a suitable rigid substrate such as aluminium composite panel, subject to installation.

How sunlight affects posters

Direct sunlight can fade printed colours and heat the material. Dark areas absorb more heat, while glass windows can increase temperature around the poster.

Indoor poster paper placed beside a sunny window may therefore fade or curl faster than the same poster displayed deeper inside the building.

For sunlight-exposed displays:

  • Use a suitable outdoor or UV-resistant print process
  • Consider protective lamination
  • Avoid heat-sensitive mounting materials
  • Confirm whether the display is behind glass
  • Expect gradual colour change over extended exposure

How rain and moisture affect the material

Water can soften paper, weaken adhesive, enter exposed board edges and cause the display to warp or separate.

Lamination protects the printed face, but it does not always seal the edges or reverse side. A laminated paper poster can still fail outdoors if water enters from the sides.

Does lamination make a poster suitable for outdoors?

Lamination improves scratch, moisture and cleaning resistance, but it does not automatically make every poster material weatherproof.

Printed surface

Lamination protects the front from light moisture, handling and minor abrasion.

Exposed edges

Water may still enter through trimmed edges, holes, mounting points or the unprotected reverse side.

Board material

Foam board and paper-based boards can still absorb moisture even when the printed face is laminated.

Adhesive system

Mounted graphics require an adhesive suitable for heat, humidity and the chosen substrate.

How wind affects outdoor displays

Wind places pressure on rigid boards and mounting points. Large lightweight boards can bend, detach or become unsafe when they are not installed correctly.

Outdoor signs should be supported according to their size, thickness, location and expected wind exposure. Cable ties, eyelets, frames and stands must be suitable for the application.

Short-term vs long-term outdoor use

Short-term outdoor displays

PP hollow board, laminated synthetic prints and temporary vinyl signs may be suitable for events, property notices and campaign signs lasting a few days or weeks.

Long-term outdoor displays

Use an outdoor-grade vinyl and a rigid substrate designed for longer exposure. Aluminium composite panel, acrylic and other specialised materials may be more appropriate.

Important questions before ordering

Where will it be displayed?

State whether the location is indoors, sheltered, beside a window or fully exposed outdoors.

How long is it needed?

A three-day event and a one-year outdoor sign require very different materials.

Will it face rain?

Even occasional rain can damage ordinary poster paper and foam board.

Will it receive direct sunlight?

Direct sunlight affects colour, adhesive, board stability and display life.

How will it be mounted?

Framing, hanging, taping, mounting and freestanding displays require different materials.

Does it need to be cleaned?

Menus and information boards may need a washable synthetic or laminated surface.

What Image Magic recommends

  • Use poster paper for economical indoor campaigns and framed displays.
  • Use foam board for lightweight indoor presentation panels.
  • Use synthetic material where moisture resistance or repeated handling is required.
  • Use PP hollow board for economical temporary outdoor signs.
  • Use solid PP board for smoother, washable and more rigid displays.
  • Use outdoor vinyl on a suitable rigid substrate for longer-term exterior signage.
Important: No display material is suitable for every outdoor condition. Performance depends on the print system, material grade, board thickness, lamination, mounting, installation, sunlight direction, rain exposure, wind and intended display period.

Frequently asked questions

Can ordinary poster paper be used outdoors?

It is not recommended for exposed outdoor use. It may be suitable for a very short period only when fully protected from rain and moisture.

Is foam board waterproof?

Standard foam board is generally intended for indoor use. Moisture can affect its paper surface, edges and internal structure.

Is PP hollow board suitable for outdoor signs?

It is commonly used for temporary outdoor signs because it is lightweight and moisture resistant. Installation and wind exposure must still be considered.

What is the best material for a poster beside a window?

Synthetic paper, laminated vinyl or a suitable rigid board may perform better than ordinary paper because windows can expose the display to heat, sunlight and condensation.

Does lamination prevent fading?

Suitable lamination may improve UV resistance, but it does not completely prevent gradual fading under prolonged sunlight.

Which board is best for long-term outdoor use?

An outdoor vinyl applied to a suitable rigid material such as aluminium composite panel is often more appropriate than paper-based or lightweight temporary boards.
