How page count affects binding

Saddle stitch

Saddle-stitched booklets are made from folded sheets, with each folded sheet creating four booklet pages. The final page count is therefore normally divisible by four.

As the booklet becomes thicker, the inner pages may push outward. This effect is sometimes called page creep and must be considered during imposition and trimming.

Perfect binding

Perfect binding requires enough thickness for the adhesive to hold the page block securely and for the cover to wrap around the spine.

The minimum suitable page count depends on paper thickness, finished size, adhesive, machinery and production method.

Wire-O binding

Wire-O capacity depends on the total thickness of the pages and covers. A larger wire is required as the document becomes thicker.

How paper weight affects binding

Paper weight influences the total document thickness, flexibility, page turning and final appearance.

Heavy saddle-stitched pages

Heavy internal paper can make the booklet bulky and cause the pages to resist closing properly.

Supply individual pages in normal reading order unless the printer specifically requests imposed spreads.

Bleed
