Acrylic and polycarbonate can look similar, but they are different plastics. Acrylic (PMMA) is often chosen for clear, colourful display work; polycarbonate (PC) is worth considering when impact resistance is the main requirement. Choose a specific sheet grade, not just a material name.

Which is better for signage and displays?

For reception signs, retail displays and decorative lettering, acrylic is a useful starting point when appearance and a polished finish matter. For panels exposed to knocks, assess polycarbonate. A material comparison does not determine the correct thickness, fixing method or structural design.

Printing and artwork preparation

Before specifying direct printing, ask the printer to confirm compatibility with the sheet and any surface coating. Request a sample when adhesion, colour or opacity matters. For clear panels, specify whether the design is viewed from the printed side or through the sheet; reverse printing and a white backing layer may be needed. Supply the finished size, artwork, hole positions and viewing direction.

Outdoor use in Malaysia

Do not assume that every clear sheet is suitable for long-term sun exposure. Check the manufacturer’s outdoor grade, UV protection, temperature limits and warranty conditions. Some polycarbonate sheets have protection on a designated side. Allow for expansion and use the fixing details specified for that sheet.

Cutting, engraving and cleaning

Acrylic is commonly used for CO₂ laser-cut lettering and engraved displays. Polycarbonate is not an automatic substitute: suitability depends on thickness, grade and equipment, and a different fabrication method may be needed. Have the fabricator identify the material and confirm the process. Clean with products approved by the sheet manufacturer; avoid abrasive cloths and unapproved solvents.

What to include in a quotation request

Send the panel dimensions, quantity, indoor or outdoor location, expected handling, colour or transparency, artwork and mounting details. Ask for the sheet grade and finish to be stated in the quotation. Compare complete fabricated prices rather than raw sheet prices alone. Availability and production suitability must be confirmed before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

Is acrylic the same as polycarbonate?

No. Acrylic is PMMA and polycarbonate is PC. They differ in impact resistance and fabrication requirements.

Is polycarbonate scratch-proof?

No. Impact resistance and scratch resistance are different properties. Ask about an abrasion-resistant grade where surface wear matters.

Can either material be used outdoors?

Suitable grades of both can be used outdoors. Check the exact product’s UV protection, exposure limits and installation instructions.
