How to Choose Sticker Material for Product Labels in Malaysia: Paper, PP, PVC & Specialty Stocks

The best label is not simply the most expensive or the shiniest. It is the construction that matches the package surface, moisture exposure, application method, brand appearance and realistic service conditions.

Quick answer

Choose paper for clean, dry indoor packs; PP matte for a lower-glare synthetic face under normal moisture exposure; PVC gloss for a shinier, flexible synthetic label; and decorative specialty stocks for dry indoor packaging where visual effect matters. Always test the complete printed label on the real container before a large order.

Start with use conditions, not material names

  • Surface: Is the pack flat, tightly curved, textured, squeezable or coated?
  • Environment: Will it meet humidity, condensation, refrigeration, oil, repeated handling or cleaning?
  • Life: Is it a short campaign label, a retail label or a label expected to remain throughout product use?
  • Appearance: Do you need a writable face, muted matte look, gloss colour, metallic sparkle or pearlescent effect?
  • Application: Will labels be applied by hand, and can the surface be cleaned and dried first?

Important: “Waterproof” can describe a face material under normal use, but finished performance also depends on ink, lamination, exposed cut edges, adhesive, surface and cleaning method. Do not assume dishwasher, freezer, chemical, immersion or permanent outdoor suitability without testing.

Paper, PP, PVC and specialty stocks compared

Paper stickers

Simili is uncoated and useful when compatible pens or markers must add prices, dates or batch notes. Mirror Kote gives a brighter coated appearance for indoor packaging seals and promotional labels. Paper is economical for dry cartons and boxes, but exposed edges and moisture can affect it.

PP matte

PP matte is a synthetic option with reduced glare and flexible handling. It suits smooth product packaging and cosmetic labels when a quieter surface and normal moisture resistance are preferred. Curves, adhesive choice and real storage conditions should still be tested.

PVC gloss

PVC gloss provides a flexible, shinier synthetic face. It is useful for glossy bottle labels and detailed shapes on clean, smooth surfaces. A glossy face does not by itself confirm resistance to every liquid, detergent, temperature or outdoor condition.

Specialty effects

Sprinkle silver, sprinkle gold and pearlescent white stocks can add premium shelf impact for gifts, beauty products and festive packaging. These decorative choices are not automatically moisture resistant and usually perform best with uncomplicated shapes in dry indoor use.

Material is only one part of the order

Decide how the labels should be supplied. Die-cut stickers are individual pieces with the backing cut to the finished outline. Kiss-cut stickers keep one sticker on a larger backing piece for easier peeling and presentation. Sheet stickers organise several labels on one backing sheet. The custom sticker printing range shows the currently available formats, while the die-cut sticker page lists the live material, shape and lamination options.

For transparent containers, remember that ordinary CMYK is not opaque. White ink may be needed to hold selected colours or text. See the verified transparent vs white sticker guide before preparing artwork.

Run a small application test

  1. Clean and dry the actual packaging surface.
  2. Apply the label without stretching or trapping dust.
  3. Leave it for the adhesive to settle.
  4. Expose the pack only to realistic storage and handling conditions.
  5. Check lifting at corners, bubbles, ink scuffing, colour contrast and barcode or QR readability.
  6. Confirm the result before approving the full quantity.

Frequently asked questions

Which sticker material is suitable for bottles?

PP matte or PVC gloss can suit clean, smooth bottles under normal moisture exposure. Test the complete label on the actual bottle, especially when condensation, refrigeration or cleaning is involved.

Are all synthetic stickers waterproof?

No absolute guarantee should be assumed. Face material, ink, lamination, cut edges, adhesive, application surface and cleaning conditions all influence finished performance.

When should paper labels be used?

Paper labels are practical for dry indoor cartons, packaging seals, price labels and short-life applications where writable or coated finishes are useful.

Do specialty sticker stocks resist moisture?

Decorative sparkle and pearlescent stocks are not automatically moisture resistant. Confirm the exact stock and test the completed label before wet-use applications.
