How the Three Printing Technologies Work

How Latex Printing Works

In a typical latex printing process, the printer deposits pigment-containing ink onto the media. Heat and airflow then remove much of the liquid carrier. Polymer particles form a film that helps bind and protect the colourant.

When the printer, media profile, temperature and ink settings are correctly matched, the print normally exits dry and can proceed to cutting, mounting or lamination without a long solvent outgassing period.

Latex printing is usually associated with flexible roll media, including self-adhesive vinyl, banner material, poster media, wallcoverings, backlit film and selected textiles.

How UV Printing Works

UV printing uses ink that reacts to ultraviolet light. The printer lays down the ink and exposes it to UV or UV-LED energy, causing the ink to cure rapidly on the substrate.

Because the ink is cured rather than absorbed through conventional drying, UV systems can print on many non-absorbent surfaces. Depending on the printer, this may include PVC board, foam board, acrylic, aluminium composite panel, glass, metal, plastic and roll media.

Some UV printers can also print white ink, clear ink, primer or multiple layers. These capabilities can help with transparent, coloured or premium display applications.

How Eco-Solvent Printing Works

Eco-solvent printing uses a solvent-based carrier to deliver pigment to a compatible printing surface. The ink interacts with the media coating, and the carrier gradually evaporates.

The print may feel dry enough to handle shortly after production, but residual solvent can remain. A specified dwell or outgassing period may therefore be required before applying an overlaminate.

The exact waiting period depends on the ink, media, printer settings, ink coverage, ventilation, roll handling and laminate system. The printer and media manufacturers’ instructions should be followed.

Dry to the touch does not always mean fully ready

A print can feel dry while still requiring additional curing, cooling or outgassing. This is particularly important before lamination, cutting, tightly rewinding or packaging a high-coverage print.

Material Compatibility: Flexible Media vs Rigid Materials

Material compatibility is one of the most important differences between latex, UV and eco-solvent printing. A printer’s theoretical capability does not guarantee reliable adhesion or acceptable appearance on every material.

Latex printing and flexible materials

Banners

Scratch and abrasion resistance

No printing method is completely scratch-proof. Resistance depends on ink adhesion, media surface, curing, ink coverage, handling and whether the graphic is protected.

  • Latex: Can provide good scratch resistance on compatible media, but high-contact graphics may still require lamination.

Which Printing Technology Is Faster?

Printer speed is only one part of the production timeline. Total turnaround includes file checking, colour setup, media loading, printing, curing, cooling, outgassing, cutting, lamination, mounting, trimming, packing and installation.

Latex production speed

Latex printing can support an efficient print-and-finish workflow because correctly cured output normally exits dry. This can be useful for urgent stickers, banners and graphics that require cutting or lamination.

The printer still needs sufficient heat and airflow. Dense ink coverage, demanding colour modes and heat-sensitive media may require slower settings.

UV production speed

UV ink cures during printing, so the material can usually proceed to cutting, packing or installation preparation without conventional drying time.

Direct-to-board printing can also eliminate a separate vinyl-mounting stage. However, white ink, clear ink, multiple layers, high-resolution modes and special effects can increase production time.

Eco-solvent production speed

Eco-solvent printers can run efficiently, but the full workflow may be longer when the print needs outgassing before lamination. The waiting period varies by ink and media system.

A fast print mode is not useful when it creates banding, insufficient ink density, poor adhesion or an unsuitable finish. Production speed should be balanced against the viewing distance and quality requirement.

For urgent work

Latex and UV can reduce post-print waiting in many workflows, but availability, machine queue, material stock and finishing capacity still determine the actual completion time.

Indoor Air, Odour and Workplace Considerations

Latex printing

Modern latex systems are commonly positioned as water-based and low odour. This can make them suitable for many indoor display, retail, office, healthcare, hospitality and residential applications.

Water-based does not mean that the ink is made only from water or that workplace requirements can be ignored. Printer installation guidance, local regulations, media odour and room ventilation must still be considered.

UV printing

UV-LED systems can have low volatile-organic-compound emissions compared with conventional solvent processes, but low VOC does not automatically mean odour-free or hazard-free.

UV inks contain reactive components before curing. Proper machine enclosure, extraction where specified, personal protection, maintenance and handling procedures remain important.

Eco-solvent printing

Eco-solvent is generally milder than older aggressive-solvent systems, but it is still a solvent-based process. Ink storage, ventilation, waste handling and manufacturer safety information must be followed.

Some modern eco-solvent inks are certified for lower emissions, but the certification applies to a particular ink and product combination. It should not be assumed that every eco-solvent ink has the same certification.
