IMAGE MAGIC PRINTING GUIDE

Paper Bag Printing Malaysia: Size Guide for Retail, Gifts, Events & Product Packaging

Choose a practical bag size, material and finish by starting with the product—not just the artwork. This Malaysian buyer guide explains the measurements and order details that matter.

A custom printed paper bag acts as moving brand packaging, but it also has to hold the packed item comfortably. The right choice depends on the item's width, depth, height, weight and inner packaging. Image Magic currently offers laminated art-card paper bags and brown or white kraft paper bags, each with its own standard sizes and order specifications.

Start with the packed product dimensions

Measure the product after it has been placed in its box, pouch, wrapping or protective insert. Record the finished pack's width, depth and height in millimetres. If several products will share one bag, arrange the complete set as it will be handed to the customer and measure that arrangement.

Width

Measure the widest horizontal face. Allow enough clearance so the item can enter without forcing the side seams.

Depth

Measure the front-to-back thickness. The bag gusset must open sufficiently around the packed item.

Height

Measure from the base to the top of the product and add sensible room for insertion, removal and the handle area.

Weight and balance

Check the total packed weight and where it sits. A compact heavy product and a large light product create different handling needs.

Important: Published bag dimensions are external dimensions. They are not identical to exact usable internal space because side gussets, the folded base and bag construction occupy room. When fit or load is critical, confirm the specification and test with the actual packed product before committing to a full quantity.

Current Image Magic paper bag sizes

The standard laminated paper bag range uses 190 gsm gloss art card, full-colour single-sided printing, front-only matte or gloss lamination and rope handles. The live product page lists a minimum of 250 pieces per design and seven PBG models. Always use the template for the selected model because every dieline is different.

ModelExternal size (W × D × H)Typical starting points
PBG001180 × 80 × 230 mmSmall gifts, beauty products and promotional items
PBG002220 × 80 × 230 mmWider compact retail items and small gift sets
PBG003250 × 95 × 350 mmApparel, documents and taller gift items
PBG004200 × 95 × 290 mmMedium portrait packs for events and retail
PBG005320 × 95 × 230 mmWide boxed products and landscape gift sets
PBG006370 × 120 × 295 mmLarger retail purchases and packages
PBG007320 × 120 × 420 mmGarments, hampers and large premium gifts

These use examples are planning prompts, not load guarantees. Compare the exact packed-product dimensions with the chosen dieline and confirm current options on the custom paper bag printing page.

Current kraft paper bag sizes

The kraft range is available in brown or white kraft with full-colour CMYK printing and twisted paper handles. The current product page lists a minimum of 50 pieces and three standard sizes.

SizeExternal size (W × D × H)Useful applications
Small150 × 80 × 210 mmCompact gifts, small retail products and event giveaways
Medium210 × 110 × 270 mmBoutique items, documents, product sets and event packs
Large260 × 120 × 310 mmLarger gifts, catalogues and promotional packages
Brown versus white kraft: Brown kraft creates a natural, understated background, while white kraft gives colourful artwork a cleaner base. The same CMYK artwork can appear different on the two paper colours, and a printed colour should not be expected to match a backlit screen exactly.

Which bag suits each buying situation?

Retail shops

Choose around the common purchase, not the smallest item sold. A boutique may need a compact size for accessories and another size for folded garments. Keep inserts, receipts and tissue paper in the fit test.

Corporate and festive gifts

Measure the finished gift box or hamper. Leave enough clearance to insert it without damaging corners, and consider whether the presentation is portrait or landscape.

Events and exhibitions

Build a sample attendee pack containing the brochure, notebook, merchandise and other items. A consistent kit helps determine the bag size and quantity before ordering.

Product packaging

Treat the bag as secondary outer packaging. Bottles, chilled products, fragile items and food should first have suitable primary or protective packaging for their specific requirements.

Paper bag artwork checklist

  • Download and use the exact template for the selected bag model or product code.
  • Keep the logo and essential text inside the indicated safe area.
  • Extend background colours and images through the bleed area shown in the template.
  • Check the front, side gussets and folding positions before final approval.
  • Prepare print artwork in CMYK and review image resolution at final size.
  • Outline or package fonts according to the supplied artwork instructions.
  • Review spelling, contact details, QR codes and campaign dates at 100% view.
  • Do not assume that a flat dieline preview represents the finished bag's visible surfaces equally.

How to plan the order

  1. Build the real pack. Place every item, insert and protective layer together exactly as the customer will receive it.
  2. Measure and shortlist. Compare the packed dimensions with the external dimensions of available bags, remembering that usable internal space is smaller.
  3. Select material and finish. Decide whether the desired presentation suits laminated art card, brown kraft or white kraft.
  4. Confirm quantity per design. Different artworks are normally treated separately; check the live minimum and pricing for each version.
  5. Prepare the correct dieline. Do not resize artwork from one bag model to another without rebuilding and checking the layout.
  6. Allow production and delivery time. Submit print-ready artwork early and confirm the required completion date before relying on it for a launch or event.

Related packaging options

A paper bag is only one part of a complete presentation. Explore Image Magic's label and packaging printing category when you also need labels, boxes, sleeves or related packaging components. Keep each component's dimensions and artwork consistent so the final pack feels intentional.

Food-use note: Do not assume a printed bag is certified for direct food contact. Food should be separately wrapped or placed in suitable inner packaging unless direct food-contact suitability has been specifically confirmed for the chosen product.

Frequently asked questions

How much extra space should I allow?

There is no universal allowance because gusset construction, product shape and packing method differ. Start from the finished pack dimensions, allow room for easy insertion and removal, and confirm a sample fit when tolerances are tight.

Can I use one bag size for every product?

You can standardise when your products are similar, but a single oversized bag may be awkward for small purchases while an undersized bag can strain folds and handles. Many retailers plan two or more practical sizes.

Should I choose brown or white kraft?

Brown kraft supports a natural visual direction, while white kraft offers a cleaner base for colourful graphics. Evaluate the printed result in relation to the paper colour rather than judging only from the screen.

Can a paper bag hold bottles or heavy products?

Fit alone does not establish load suitability. Consider total weight, balance, primary packaging and handling. Ask the printing team to review the intended use and test with the actual packed item where performance is critical.

Can food be placed directly in the bag?

Direct food-contact suitability is not confirmed by the general bag description. Use appropriate inner food packaging unless the chosen product has been specifically confirmed for direct contact.
