IMAGE MAGIC POSTER PRINTING GUIDE

Poster Size Guide Malaysia: A3, A2, A1, A0, Paper & Display Options

Compare standard A-series dimensions and choose a practical poster material, mounting method and artwork setup for retail, events, offices and promotional displays.

A3, A2, A1 and A0 posters share the same ISO A-series proportions, so a correctly prepared design can be adapted between sizes without changing its shape. The best finished size still depends on viewing distance, available wall or frame space, message length and whether the poster will be paper, synthetic media or mounted on a rigid board.

Orientation: The listed measurements can be used in portrait or landscape orientation. An A1 landscape poster is 841 mm wide × 594 mm high; the size designation does not change.

How the A-series scales

Each A-series size has the same aspect ratio. Folding an A0 sheet in half along its longer dimension creates A1; repeating the process creates A2 and then A3. This makes it easier to resize a campaign layout across several poster sizes without cropping—provided the artwork is built correctly and text remains readable at every output size.

A3

Close-view poster

Suitable where the reader can stand nearby, such as counters, lifts, notice areas and menu displays.

A2

Versatile wall size

Offers more visual impact than A3 while remaining manageable for many indoor frames and display points.

A1

Promotional display

Provides room for a strong campaign visual, headline, key details and a clear call to action.

A0

Large-format communication

Useful for high-impact indoor placements where the space and viewing distance justify the larger format.

Choose poster size by viewing distance

Poster size and text size must work together. An A0 poster filled with small paragraphs may be harder to use than a well-designed A2 poster with a short message. Think about where viewers first see the poster, how quickly they pass it and whether they need to read detailed information.

  • Within arm's reach: A3 or A2 can work for menus, instructions, schedules and notices with supporting details.
  • Across a room or corridor: A2 or A1 generally gives more room for a larger headline and fewer information blocks.
  • Across a retail floor or event area: A1 or A0 can improve visibility when the layout uses large text and strong contrast.
  • From a moving vehicle: Standard poster sizes may not be appropriate; use a purpose-designed large-format sign or banner and keep the message extremely short.
Planning reminder: These are starting points, not fixed readability guarantees. Lighting, contrast, typeface, installation height and visual obstructions can change the result. Test a full-size headline sample at the intended distance when visibility is critical.

Paper poster, synthetic poster or rigid board?

The correct material depends on the display location and how the print will be handled. The existing Image Magic guide to indoor versus outdoor poster materials explains the environmental differences in more detail.

Poster paper

A practical choice for short-term indoor promotions, frames and protected wall displays. Keep it dry and use suitable mounting to reduce curling or damage.

Synthetic media

Offers better moisture and tear resistance than ordinary paper for frequently handled notices or selected humid and sheltered locations. Suitability still depends on the exact product and mounting.

Foam board

A lightweight 5 mm rigid display option for exhibitions, welcome boards, presentations and indoor events. It is easy to carry but should be protected from unsuitable moisture and impact.

PVC hard board

A firmer 5 mm plastic-based board for office signs, menus and retail displays where more rigidity and moisture resistance are useful.

PP hollow board

A lightweight 5 mm corrugated polypropylene option for roadshows, temporary event signs, school notices and sheltered promotional displays.

Framed or mounted display

Frames, easels and board mounting affect the final visible area. Confirm whether the frame covers the edges or the stand supports the chosen size.

Current Image Magic poster-board options

Image Magic's current poster board printing product combines 5 mm Foam Board, 5 mm PVC Hard Board and 5 mm PP Hollow Board in one ordering workflow. It lists full-colour, single-sided printing, a minimum from one piece and a maximum finished board size of 4 ft × 6 ft (48 × 72 inches, approximately 1219 × 1829 mm).

Size and accessory availability can be filtered by the selected board. Confirm the live options before preparing artwork or arranging delivery. Rigid boards may require self-collection or local delivery rather than normal parcel handling, depending on the current order specification.

A3 to A0 artwork setup

Create the artwork at the final page size whenever practical. Use the printer's current bleed and safe-area instructions, keep important content away from trim edges and confirm whether the finished poster will be placed inside a frame.

  1. Set the document size. Choose the correct A3, A2, A1 or A0 dimensions and orientation.
  2. Add the required bleed. Extend backgrounds and images beyond the trim line according to the supplied specification.
  3. Protect the safe area. Keep text, logos, QR codes and borders inside the recommended safe zone.
  4. Work in CMYK. Review colour expectations for print instead of relying only on a backlit RGB screen.
  5. Check effective resolution. Inspect placed images at their final printed scale, especially when enlarging an older or web-sourced graphic.
  6. Outline or package fonts. Follow the artwork guideline so type does not substitute unexpectedly.
  7. Export a print-ready PDF. Review the final PDF page size, orientation, bleed and visible content before uploading.

Image resolution for large posters

Large posters are often viewed from farther away than brochures, but that does not make every low-resolution image acceptable. A small online image can become visibly pixelated when enlarged to A1 or A0. The correct requirement depends on print process, artwork scale and viewing distance.

Useful check: Ask the designer for the image's effective resolution at final output size. If the file is prepared at 50% or 25% scale, communicate that scale clearly and calculate the effective result—not just the document's displayed resolution.

Portrait or landscape?

Portrait is common for retail promotions, notice boards and easel displays because it fits a vertical reading flow. Landscape can work better for schedules, comparison charts, panoramic images and wide walls. Choose based on the installation space and information hierarchy rather than habit.

When several posters will be displayed together, keep the orientation, margins, heading positions and visual system consistent. A coordinated A-series campaign can use the same master layout while adjusting type size and information density for each output.

Mounting and display checklist

  • Measure the frame, wall, easel or panel—not only the available room.
  • Confirm whether the frame lip hides part of the printed edge.
  • Check the stand's supported board size and weight before ordering.
  • Identify exposure to sunlight, humidity, rain, cleaning and frequent handling.
  • Use a mounting method appropriate for the substrate and location.
  • Do not assume lamination protects every board edge or makes a paper poster suitable for exposed outdoor use.
  • For public or elevated displays, confirm safe installation and venue approval.

When to use a custom size instead

A-series posters are convenient, but a custom size may fit a shop window, menu panel, exhibition booth or architectural space better. Compare the final proportions with the intended surface and check the printer's maximum dimensions. Browse the broader display sign printing category when the job requires rigid signage, special display formats or a size beyond a standard paper poster.

Frequently asked questions

Which is bigger: A1 or A2?

A1 is bigger. A1 measures 594 × 841 mm, while A2 measures 420 × 594 mm. Two A2 sheets together have the same area as one A1 sheet.

What is the most versatile poster size?

A2 is a useful indoor starting point because it has more impact than A3 while remaining manageable in many wall and frame locations. The best choice still depends on space and viewing distance.

Should a retail poster be A1 or A0?

Use the available display space and viewing distance. A1 may suit a shop window or product zone, while A0 can support a larger visual and headline where there is adequate room. Test the layout at scale before finalising.

Can the same artwork be used for A3, A2, A1 and A0?

The aspect ratio is the same, but text size, image resolution and information density must still be reviewed at every output size. Do not simply enlarge a low-resolution raster file.

Is foam board suitable outdoors?

Foam board is primarily positioned as a lightweight indoor display. For outdoor or sheltered use, choose a material and mounting method specifically suited to the exposure and duration.

What is the maximum current poster-board size?

The current Image Magic poster-board product lists a maximum finished size of 4 ft × 6 ft, subject to material and live size availability.
