How Sequential Numbering Works on Tyvek Wristbands

Using QR Codes on Tyvek Wristbands

A QR code can represent a participant ID, registration token, website address, event information page or another digital reference.

Unique QR code

Each wristband contains a different QR code linked to a unique participant, ticket, registration or transaction record.

Repeated QR code

Every wristband carries the same code, for example a link to an event schedule, venue map, feedback form or sponsor page.

Do not confuse the two purposes

A repeated QR code can be useful for marketing or information but cannot uniquely identify individual participants.

Keep the code high contrast

Dark code elements against a clean light background are generally easier to scan than decorative low-contrast combinations.

Protect the clear area

Do not allow photographs, text, borders or decorative graphics to crowd the QR code. The clear area around the code helps compatible devices recognise it.

Avoid unnecessary data inside the QR code

A short unique token or ID can be preferable to directly encoding a large amount of participant information. The code remains simpler, and sensitive personal details do not need to be visibly recoverable from the wristband.

Always test the physical wristband. A code that scans perfectly from a flat artwork file may behave differently when printed, bent and wrapped around a participant's wrist.

Using Barcodes on Tyvek Wristbands

One-dimensional barcodes remain useful when the event already has scanners, ticketing equipment or software built around a specific barcode format.

Confirm the barcode format

Barcode systems may use different symbologies. The organiser should tell the printing supplier which format is required rather than requesting only “a barcode”.

Allow enough horizontal space

A barcode can require more width than a QR code. Excessive shrinking can make individual bars difficult for scanners to distinguish.

Do not distort the bars

Stretching, compressing or disproportionately resizing a barcode can affect its scanning reliability.

Include the human-readable ID

Printing the identifier below or beside the barcode provides an important fallback when scanning is unavailable.

Test the actual scanner

Do not assume that a code that works with one mobile application will work with the scanners used at the event entrance.

A Printed QR Code or Barcode Is Not an Access-Control System by Itself

This is one of the most important points for event organisers.

Printing a QR code or barcode does not automatically create registration, check-in, ticket validation, attendance tracking or one-time redemption.

The code is simply a machine-readable representation of data or an identifier. To perform real-time operations, the organiser needs suitable software or a database that knows what the identifier means.

Wristband Carries the visible number and/or machine-readable identifier.
Scanner or phone Reads the code and sends the identifier to the application.
Application Determines whether the identifier is valid, used, cancelled or assigned to a category.
Database Stores the event record, participant status, access permissions or redemption history.

Example: one-time meal redemption

The QR code can identify wristband 004253, but the event system must record whether meal entitlement for 004253 has already been redeemed. Printing the QR code alone cannot prevent repeated scanning.

Example: VIP access

The code may identify the participant, while the database determines whether that record has permission to enter the VIP area.

Plan the system before the printing. Do not print thousands of wristbands and only afterwards decide how the codes will connect to the registration system.

A Practical Event Wristband Data Workflow

Organisers do not need to understand the technical printing process, but they should define how identification will move through the event.
